In a recent article in Gallup’s Business Journal, Raad Al-Saady, managing director for more than 7,000 employees at Abdul Latif Jameel, one of the biggest companies in the Middle East, makes a powerful case about the problems inherent in any business that is chalk full of so-so managers.
It is natural for most businesses and most management teams to focus on the most apparent and pressing issues of the day. Even poor leaders seldom overlook the most obvious personnel problems and average leaders will notice their largest opportunities for growth. But very few leaders pay enough attention to those managers who are just getting by, who are not constantly helping their team or department to improve and grow. Over time, these so-so leaders become a company’s largest obstacle in the true pursuit of excellence.
